Job Description

Responsibilities:
The engineer will serve as an optical engineer in support to an Air Force Research Laboratory contract. The engineer will be an integral member of a joint Government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment to discover, develop, and transition Directed Energy aero-optical and beam control technologies. This effort spans research and development in formulating concepts, implementing and overseeing laboratory and field experiments, designing and building prototype system components, testing feasibility, and modeling, and simulation to overcome the physical challenges of propagating high-power laser beams through turbulent and aero optical disturbed atmospheres. The engineer’s duties will include planning, modeling, coordinating, and conducting laboratory tests, and analyzing and comparing the results to models and test data from optical systems and sensors. Must have a working knowledge of geometric and Fourier optics, and optical bench alignment techniques and equipment.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform alignment and operation of complex bench top optical systems.
  • Operate and maintain state to the art optical sensors and cameras.
  • Perform computer modeling of optical propagation using fundamental physics of atmospheric properties and optics.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience
  • Master of Science in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering, or Bachelors of Science in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering and at least 4 years relevant experience
  • Experience in or working academic knowledge of laser beam propagation through turbulent atmosphere
  • Experience using ZEMAX or similar ray-trace code to design and analyze optics configurations.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse technical teams.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete project documentation.
  • Experience preparing and executing integration test procedures and supporting integration into a larger customer system architecture.
  • Experience working within a collaborative, distributed, team environment.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of new processes.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Physics, Mathematics, or Engineering or PhD Candidate
  • Active Department of Defense Secret or Top-Secret Security Clearance
  • Experience managing optical laboratories and directing research activities
  • Working knowledge of beam compensation and experience in design of wave-front correction techniques due to atmospheric disturbances
  • Working knowledge of C++ programming
  • Experience developing test plans
  • Experience preparing and executing integration plans and procedures and supporting integration into a system architecture.
  • Demonstrated minimum oversight to accomplish directed tasks
  • Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and existing customers
