Key Roles
Senior
To provide expert engineering services and support to assigned group. To successfully manage assignments in a safe, regulatory compliant, timely, and cost effective manner. Demonstrates robust technical expertise in work group area and related technical areas. Ability to work independently on assignments and provide work direction to staff/contractors. Willingly accepts range of assignments. Serves as a technical representative of EKPC in a variety of public and corporate settings.
Principal
The Principal Engineer serves as a key technical contributor and advisor who consults with all EKPC business units as well as the member systems on engineering and other technical activities. Serves as a technical consultant who utilizes advanced expertise to assess and recommend best practices, process improvements, cost savings, and workplace safety improvements. The Principal Engineer has discipline specific expertise and utility industry experience necessary to evaluate project plans, anticipate potential problems, and provide solutions for the most complex projects. This position guides and mentors less experienced staff, and serves as an advisor to company leadership.
Key Responsibilities
All Specialties
Develops/finalizes reports and work plans which recommend action considering short and long-range objectives, economic and budget considerations, etc.
Develops and coordinates departmental project work plans and manages through completion taking needed correction action. Informs supervisor and manager of any major developments or changes in direction of the project.
Leads development of work plans and monitors actual progress of applicable portions, taking any corrective action required.
Completes status report for all work assignments and keeps management informed on progress.
Technical representative in meetings with public, members, vendors, contractors, and other utilities.
Successfully manages complex assignments on routine basis.
Trains and develops less experienced engineers.
Provides work direction to other staff/contractors on projects as assigned.
Manages multiples assignments and mentors other staff.
Analyzes data and makes recommendations and/or decisions.
Maintains and approves technical records (e.g. drawings, files, databases).
Oversee and/or completes preparation of estimates (cost, work order, schedules).
Thorough knowledge of all relevant procedures, specifications, and applicable codes, regulations, compliance rules, and standards (e.g. RUS).
Collaborates with other team members and supervisors in carrying out assignments.
Thorough understanding of how decision making and work product impacts other systems, operations, and processes.
Provides engineering assistance for Member Cooperatives.
Creates corporate standards and specification related to respective expertise.
Requires mature engineering knowledge and judgment of sound engineering practices and standards.
Demonstrates strong technical expertise and awareness of job related field, and continues to remain current on the industry.
Performs all work in a safe and timely manner.
Project Management
Oversees and manages capital projects (generally those with the highest cost or levels of complexity/criticality) utilizing the E&C Project Lifecycle.
Manages capital budget per the approved project estimate.
Determines the necessary equipment, materials, and personnel needed to safely execute the project.
Ensures compliance with Safety and Environmental regulations and building codes.
Evaluates project risks.
Works with scheduling department to establish and manage critical path project schedule.
Ensures project development plan is established and updated to manage project and team assignments.
Utilizing OPPM, tracks all key project performance indicators.
Conducts pre-bid meetings for assigned projects and contracts as well as attends all bid openings.
Conforms all contracts associated with projects greater than $1M.
Leads continuous improvement efforts to eliminate non-value added processes associated with the E&C Project Lifecycle and other EKPC support requirements.
Allocates, delegates, and manages resources to ensure projects are executed successfully.
Keeps all stakeholders aware of project progress and regularly prepares progress reports.
Develops presentations to upper management (CMC, COC, SI, and Board)
Performs other duties as assigned.
Principal
Provides expert advice and counsel by utilizing extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering design, principles, practices, and project management.
Suggests and implements innovative and cost effective solutions to resolve complex, unique, hazardous, or critical problems.
Serves as project manager or the technical lead for complex and highly technical projects.
Provides opinions on issues related to corporate strategy and individual business unit initiatives.
Provides technical input and review of internal regulatory compliance documentation.
Provides technical commentary and input on pending legislation affecting electric utility operation in Kentucky.
Acts as technical expert, provides written testimony, and serves as a key witness in court of law hearings, KY Public Service Commission proceedings, and legislative sessions.
Develops, fosters, and maintains working relationships with manufacturers, vendors, and consulting firms.
Mentors project team members and junior staff.
Attends trade shows, conferences, workshops, seminars, user group meetings, and other educational opportunities on a routine basis.
Recommends and cost justifies engineering projects to improve operational efficiencies, mitigate reoccurring failures, improve system restoration time, increase equipment longevity, and reduce costs.
Accurately performs complete evaluations of engineering alternatives and the identification of the optimal solution for the electric power system.
Performs root-cause analysis and recommends approaches to mitigate future failures or improve processes.
Establishes, maintains, and improves relationships with internal customers and the member systems, including monitoring the relationships and initiating actions to improve relationships, as needed.
Leads or participates in Incident Investigations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Requirements
Education and Certifications / Licenses:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program required. All disciplines considered.
Registered Professional Engineering license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky preferred.
Experience:
Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible engineering work experience required.

Major electric generation construction project management or comparable major capital construction experience preferred.
$100 million in project management portfolio experience preferred.
Experience with the successful execution of civil, mechanical, and electrical projects related to safety, cost, schedule, and quality (scope) associated with transmission and/or power generation.
Success developing partnerships both internal and external in order to execute projects.
A thorough understanding of critical path management for project scheduling.
Experience with CADD, Primavera, and Microsoft products required.
Principal
Education and Certifications / Licenses:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program required. Based upon business needs, a specific discipline may be determined.
Registered Professional Engineering license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky required. Twenty (20) years of verified progressive engineering experience may substitute in lieu of Professional Engineering license.
Experience:
A minimum of sixteen (16) years of progressively responsible engineering work experience required.
Twenty (20) years of verified progressive engineering experience without a Professional Engineering license substitutes for 16 (sixteen) years of experience and a Professional Engineering license.
Without a Professional Engineer license, the Kentucky State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers states a designation by EKPC as a Principal Engineer is not a licensed professional engineer as that term is defined in KRS 322.010.
Approval from the COO and CEO required.
